Short Skirts and Missing Flip Flops

I have delayed long enough and now it is past time; time to take inventory of our summer clothes for our vacation to Arizona to visit Husband’s family.  Carter should be set, having hand me downs from Cody.  Cody has hand me downs from various friends but will probably need an extra pair or two of shorts to round off his summer collection.  (I laugh at my choice of words, summer collection, as if The Cody Collection is made up of cutting edge fashion, little boy runway material, instead of a modge podge of hand me downs, thrift store finds, a consignment piece or two, and an outfit from Grandma!)

This morning I pulled out the plastic bin of my summer clothes where it has been collecting dust under the bed.  I was in for a shock.  Did I really wear skirts that short just last year?  There was not just one that caused my eyebrow to raise but three.  I am pretty sure I have not grown taller since last summer, although I may have grown a tiny bit in the girth.  The skirts still fit me but I am not entirely sure I want to wear them.  It seems that I have aged beyond my years since last summer into one of those people who shake their heads in dismay at the clothing those pesky young folk are wearing.

And then there is the issue of shoes.  I know I had a pair of flip flops last year but for the life of me I can’t find them.  And the boys footwear situation is even grimmer.  They have outgrown their water shoes and have no sandals.  We live in the Pacific Northwest – we wear rain boots and mildew resistant sneakers.  Shoe shopping for the boys is nearly impossible.  Cody wears Hatchback shoes, a special order shoe that fits his orthotic.  When he does not wear his orthotic, which isn’t often, he does not weight bear on his right heel so most shoes he ends up walking right out of.  And Carter inherited his papa’s wide feet.  Not only are they wide but they are fat so most shoes his size are too shallow and hurt the tops of his feet.

Assuming I am able to get us proper attire for the trip there there is still the list to write for our dog/cat/house sitter, the house to clean so they don’t think we really live such a cluttered life, extra humming bird feeders to fill and hang, homemade pumpkin muffins to make for Cody’s entire class for his birthday snack, oh and two birthday parties to plan, one of which we will be having just a day after we get back.  Ack!

So, now you know what I will be doing and where I will be when you don’t see posts or comments from me for the next week or so.  I will be packing, freaking out over birthday parties, or sitting in the Arizona sun drinking margaritas and Mexican beer with lime instead of blogging.  I have been working on a birthday post for Cody’s birthday and since I have never missed a Simple Sunday post I hope to be able to get one together for you during our trip.

That is all.  My superhero cape is at full flutter and I am just a blur you can only see from the corner of your eye.

your mom-ambition is about 10 million times better than mine. drink that beer!

Not beer time just yet, time for coffee. I have to find a darn strawberry cake (the cake part being strawberry not some nasty filling) for Cody’s birthday cake. It was the one thing he requested and I don’t have time to make one nor do I have a 1/2 sheet cake pan if I did have time. None of the grocery stores or bakeries make them – what the heck?

Trust me there will be plenty of beer once we get to Arizona. Maybe even on the plane on the way there…

They won’t make one to order for you? What the hell? Is it a Nazi bakery??

        • shoes says:

I don’t know but I am starting to think it is a conspiracy! It’s not like I am asking for wild red huckleberry cake or something obscure like that. One lady even laughed and told me “good luck finding that.” (QFC bakery if you want to boycott them now like I am). I refuse to go to one of those wedding cake bakeries even though I am sure they would special order because I am sure they would also charge way more than I would pay for a 6 year old’s birthday cake.
          Grrrr. Sorry for venting.

Convince him that strawberry shortcake is way cooler than plain old sheet cake? (I’ve never been in a QFC bakery, and it appears as though I never will be, lol). Good luck!!!

  2. Are you going to change your blog name to:

Lost Shoes on the Wrong Feet

    • shoes says:

Only if I can prove that someone stole my flip flops and are wearing them around. But then I guess it would be Stolen Shoes on the Wrong Feet…

  3. I love this: “My superhero cape is at full flutter and I am just a blur you can only see from the corner of your eye.” ! : )

Thank you I made it sound more impressive than I really am but “My superhero cape is fluttering in the car door while I drive like a blur around town trying to get everything done but not really getting anything done” did not have the feel I was looking for. 🙂

  4. I laughed out loud about the short skirts…just this morning before work I paused to consider a black mini which really wasn’t too mini, and started to pull it out. But then something, I think my age, stopped me and decided I should bypass it altogether. I wound up spending the day in a slinky ankle-length black skirt instead. Ho hum.

My wardrobe is kind of like a secretive mystic zone where things disappear not to be found, and things from years ago resurface like magic! I hope you all have a great time! 🙂

I love your description of your wardrobe! I found my flip flops at last as well as some silver, strapped high heels I can’t even remember the last time I wore.

I am looking forward to some sun and warmth – it will be a great time I am sure.

Your post made me laugh thinking of my own “summer wardrobe” and how sparse it is. I won’t even wear shorts most of the time! lol I know I bought a cute sundress last year but I don’t even know if it made it home from the beach in August. Luckily it’s like 40 here so I have time to sort this out! Enjoy your time in the sun!

    • shoes says:

My summer wardrobe needs some serious help. I picked up a couple tank tops, a skirt, and some shorts for the trip so I will be doing pretty good once summer actually comes to our house.

  7. I still have a skirt I wore when I was 23 and I refuse to get rid of it even though it’s the size of a washcloth! I will never wear it…it fits my left thigh nicely, but it is just something to show the grandkids one day…”I wore that and it fit!”. Good luck getting ready and have a wonderful trip. Miss a post….live dangerously 🙂

    • shoes says:

Hahahaha!!! Too funny. Maybe I should save one of my short skirts for a stroll down memory lane.

I think we are packed and ready to go. I can’t wait to get there and lounge in the warmth of the sun.

Miss a post?!? Now you are just talking crazy talk! 🙂

I imagine that the Cody and Carter Collection contains copious quantities of converses and galoshes (darn – can’t think of a C word for boot)… have a fabulous time in Arizona. Are cupcakes a possibility for the party? Probably too late, but sometimes cupcake places have more exotic flavors including the elusive strawberry.

    • shoes says:

Hehehe – your alliteration made me laugh! We made Cody strawberry cupcakes for his actual birthday and he got to enjoy them with his Arizona cousins.

      • Beth says:

Glad to hear that Cody got his strawberry cake fix. My daughter also loves strawberry cupcakes – birthday special request 2 years running.

Hilarious. I also find that my modesty/prudishness waxes and wanes. One year I will think something is too short/tight/low cut and the next I will happily wear something shorter, tighter, and lower cut. And then back again. Do what feels right. That’s all that matters.

Cheers, and have a great vacation!
