Wow That Guy has the Instincts of a Plant!

It was a bird this time and not a rat festively decorated with a golden bow.  The boys don’t understand why Delilah, the cat who is not our cat, keeps bringing gifts of dead animals.  And they don’t get that I find it a little endearing and sweet.  To me it is as if she is inviting us to be part of her tribe; a way of letting us know that she considers us worthy of her feline attention.  And I think she may be bragging a bit about her hunting skills.

cody:  Why does Delilah keep bringing us dead things?

me:  Well, for Delilah, a dead bird or snake is a gift, something nice to share.

cody:  But we tell her that we don’t like dead things and she just keeps bringing them and bringing them.

carter: Bird not alive anymore?  Poor bird.  Why ‘Lilah make bird dead?  Bird is sad momma?

me:  Cody, Delilah can’t understand when we tell her we don’t like her bringing us dead things.  Actually, it is her way of telling us she likes us so it is kinda nice that she shares her animals with us.  Yes Carter the bird is dead.  Delilah is a cat and she hunts and kills little animals.  It is part of her instincts and a part of how nature works.

I figured I would leave it at that even though the scientist in me really wanted to prattle on about the birds death being a good example of natural selection.  Of course, my five year old never just “leaves it at that.”  He picked up on the word instinct and asked me what it meant.  I explained it as best I could and we left the bird on the lawn for Husband to scoop up with the shovel; one last flight into the forest for our feathered friend.  (I would have done this myself but I did not want Husband to feel left out of the whole dead animal gift giving thing.)  If you are reading this Husband, you are welcome.

The next day Cody randomly asks me if plants have instincts.  Ah, but I love that boy!  So instead of discussing natural selection, we got to have a great conversation about phototropism, directional growth as determined by a light source.  I am not really sure if phototropic behavior counts as plant instincts but it sounded nice so I went with it.

“Hum,” mused Samuel “perhaps my instincts on this one were a bit off.”

100

I do not remember when I first started writing.  I have notebooks with my writings in them dating back to 1987, back farther still if you count my lockable diary I got when I was in the third grade.  I enjoyed playing with words, pairing words not typically seen together, just to hear how they would sound, what type of vibe they would give off.  In high school English class I would learn the rules so that I could “break” them.  Oh yes, little defiant me would start sentences with (gasp!) and.  I would put quotations around thin air on the top of the page and claim that to be the title of my poem when our teacher required all our poems to have titles.  I remember writing a poem about an obtuse triangle who wished to be a right triangle (yes, I know, what a great topic, right!) and drawing a picture of a triangle as my title.  And that was a couple years before Prince changed his name to the Love Symbol.

In my early teen years I wrote a lot about darkness and was really hung up on the color gray as a feeling of not right or wrong, not black or white, not alive or dead – just somewhere in between unsure and occasionally forgotten.

In school I had a good solid group of friends but most of the boys I hung out with were not the type you would want your daughter spending time with.  I listened to butt rock, hair bands, and a bit of The Cure for good measure.  I acted the bad girl role but could never really fully commit to it.  I dated guys that were a couple years older then me.  I put myself in situations that could have been disastrous but were not.  Through all of it I wrote.

I do not remember if it was the end of my junior year or the start of my senior one that I started dating and eventually became engaged to a manipulative, emotionally abusive, prick whom I will refer to as Asshat.  I stayed with Asshat for over three years.  A lot can happen in three years and during that time I stopped writing.  I did manage to complete almost a year of college before the monies I had saved, which should have lasted for several, ran out.  We sold everything we owned, and ended up living out of our Buick Regal for a couple months before landing in Arizona where we couch surfed at Asshat’s friends places.

When I was finally able to screw my courage to the sticking place and leave him I was too proud to ask my parents for help.  I stayed in Arizona and built myself back up.  But for some reason I did not start writing again.  I worked, gained residency and promptly got myself back into college.  I got a degree in the sciences where the only writing I had to do was technical with pretty graphs and eye blurring printouts of DNA sequences.  I met Husband and we dated for six and a half years before getting married.  Four years later we had Cody followed by Carter two years after that.  But still I did not write.

Seven months ago and 100 posts later here I am – writing.

Tragic

My children like to exaggerate or maybe things through the eyes of a child are exaggerated.  I don’t know, but whatever the case my three year old son becomes a drama show over certain things.

A quick list of things my three year old considers tragic:

  1. Not having a towel in the bathroom to dry his hands.
  2. Being served a sandwich that has bread other than whole wheat.
  3. Getting his hair brushed.
  4. Having to put on boots that are cold from being outside overnight.
  5. Looking for but not finding his bird book when he wants to look up Stellar Jays.
  6. Realizing that the small jar that holds mini tootsie rolls (bribes for using the toilet) is running low.
  7. Broken sidewalk chalk.
  8. A piece of dog poo “hiding” in the grass that I missed while picking up the backyard.
  9. Time out.
  10. The bathwater being “too wet” when it gets on his head or face.

Not to be outdone by my three year old here is a short list of things I consider tragic:

  1. Running out of spray n’ wash, ice cream, coffee or beer – not necessarily in that order.
  2. Having to make more then one trip from the car to the house.  I would rather risk herniation of some part of my body or a dislocated shoulder to get it all in one trip.
  3. A frozen hummingbird feeder.  It is people like me that have altered their migratory behavior by putting out the feeders in the first place so I really should take some responsibility for it and do it right.
  4. My inability to spell.  I may have a college degree but most fifth graders could probably spell better than me.

It appears as though the scientific community has solved Carter’s tragic item number 10.  So “thank you” to all the chemists who worked so hard on creating dry water (can I still add bubbles to that?)  Now if you can just focus your research and funding on a bottomless keg for me that would be great?

The Kreativ Blogger Award

Okay, I am feeling a bit guilty.  Almost three weeks ago I was given the Kreativ Blogger Award from one of my long time (long time is a relative term since I have only been blogging for 6 months) blog readers Jodi over at jodistone a wonderful blog about life with her two, heavy on the personality, dogs Sampson and Delilah.  She notified me of the award on December 12th, two days after my dad ended up in the hospital due to a pretty bad episode caused by his Alzheimer’s.  There were complications and it was beyond awful.  After 19 days in 2 different hospitals he is finally back in his hometown at a long term Alzheimer’s and Dementia care facility about thirty minutes away from my mom.  We have lost more of him but he is still in there.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that I am very grateful for all of you out there and your support and comments and (wow!) the awards even though it has taken me a while to respond.  I really need to get off my keister and write a post about this award so here it is.  You see, I just found out today, much to my surprise, that Mona Lisa over at mona lisa memoris, has also honored me with the Kreativ Blogger Award.   So a very big thank you to Jodi and Mona Lisa.  It means a great deal to me for my blog to be recognized and awarded.kreativbloggeraward

As with most of these blogging awards, there are some fun rules that come with it.  It appears that this one asks that you to share ten things about yourself or your blog that others may not know and to pass along the award to six other blogs.

So here are ten things about me:

  1. My favorite color is orange.
  2. I got my bellybutton pierced when I was 19 or 20 but took out the ring when I became pregnant at age 31 .  I haven’t gotten around to putting it back in but I will someday.
  3. I do not like bananas unless there is chocolate or ice cream involved.
  4. I am jealous of blogs that have a consistent topic or purpose.  Mine sometimes seems a bit scattered and bipolar but I just can’t stick to singular topic for long.
  5. If I was locked in a room with a Costco chocolate cake and no one was around there is a serious possibility that I would attempt to eat the entire cake.  It is just that good.  Or I am just that bad.
  6. I sometimes think we need a third child.
  7. I am completely unable to focus on anything when I have a broken or jagged fingernail.
  8. I quite often go several days without drinking water.  I just don’t like the stuff.
  9. I have worn the same ring on my right thumb everyday for over fifteen years.
  10. I prefer a good microbrew over wine.

And here are six blogs (in no particular order) I would like to share a bit of blogging award love with:

  1. Illusion of Sanity
  2. The Restless Nest
  3. Mommy Said A Swear Word
  4. Healthy Working Mom
  5. Life Takes Over
  6. Veggie Sandwich Generation

I hope you get a chance to check out these blogs.  They each have their own something special that keep me coming back for more.  As to Jodi and Mona Lisa, thank you again!

A Tuna Fish Sandwich With a Side of Elephantiasis Please

Lunch started out normal enough.  On the menu: three tuna fish sandwiches (two with mustard), one peanut butter and honey sandwich, cottage cheese, and wheat thins.

At first the conversational hum was about passing the crackers or requests for a napkin.  Then, with a spoonful of cottage cheese raised half way to his mouth, Cody asked “what is diphtheria?”  Several weeks ago Cody came home from school with a new library book all about the Siberian Husky and there is a chapter dedicated to the great serum run of 1925.  What, you don’t know what that is?  Well neither did I so let me enlighten you.  Basically many people in Nome Alaska came down with diphtheria and required a life saving serum, the nearest supply of which was located over 1,000 miles away in Anchorage.  Several dogsled teams worked together to get the serum to the people as quickly as possible by working together.  At this part in the story I always stress how important teamwork is and isn’t is nice how they all worked together, blah, blah, blah, you know things moms should say.  As a side note, Cody has now been asking for a Siberian Husky as a pet much more often than his old standby, the peacock.

siberian-huskypeacock

So back to lunch.  Husband, who was working out of the house and had the pleasure of dining with us, tells him that diphtheria is a disease.  In true inquisitive five year old form Cody wants to know what other diseases there are.  I start talking about such fascinating diseases as malaria, the bubonic plague, Ebola, and cholera.  I thought I showed great self restraint by not going into detail about cholera cots, an image that has forever been burned into my mind by my infectious disease college professor over ten years ago.  Husband brings up influenza and the common cold.  How, well, common.  So as not to end our lunchtime conversation of diseases on a dull note, I bust out with elephantiasis.

Elephantiasis is really quite interesting or rather filarial elephantiasis is.  In a complex interplay; microscopic pathogenic worms are injected into a human via an infected mosquito and move into the human’s lymphatic system where it breeds and grows.  Within the worms reside a bacteria that, when the worms die and decay, are released into the bloodstream.  So your lymphatic system not only gets all clogged up by the procreating worms but your immune system continues to freak out causing a chronic lymphatic inflammatory response.  The body increases the production of connective tissue resulting in thick and hardened skin and gross enlargement of  mainly the lower extremities.

So that is how during our lunchtime conversation we came to talk about massive scrotums, large enough to sit on that required the use of a wheelbarrow to aid in mobility.

Elephantitis

Seriously, do other people have such interesting lunchtime conversations or is it just us?

All I Want For Christmas

Husband and I do not generally exchange gifts; we are big into stocking stuffers and the rest is for the kids.  Last year I got two gifts from Husband/Santa that I was quite excited about; one of them I asked for, the other I did not.  Can you guess which is which?

logsplitter

Victorias-Secret-Gift-Card

If you guessed the log splitter you would be right.  Yup, I was very excited to see a large box with a bow on it under the tree (it would not fit into my stocking, perhaps I need to look into getting a larger one).  The Victoria’s Secret gift card was very much out of the ordinary for Husband.  The only explanation I can come up with was that he was sick of hearing me constantly bitch that I did not have a single bra that fit after being either pregnant or nursing for four years straight (pregnant – nurse for 18 months – pregnant – nurse for 18 months).  Maybe he was sick of hearing me complain about it and not actually do anything about it.

This year there are once again two gifts that really stand out for me.  The first is a large cookbook all about and only about pie.  Smile  As I am sure you all know, National Pie Day is January 23rd and this year will be my third year hosting.  I am thinking that one of the pies I will make will be a buttermilk pie because I have never heard of such a thing until thumbing through my new pie book.  I had asked for the book a while back but had forgotten so it was a great surprise.  I am sure you will hear more about our pie day festivities later.

The next gift I actually danced a little dance over.  It was, (are you sitting down?), a keychain garage door opener!!  Best.  Gift.  Ever.  For the last hundred years or so we have been in the process of building a detached garage that will, if we don’t all die of old age first, have access to our house through a non existent man door in our current attached garage that will eventually be converted into more living space (did you get all that?)  But for now, when our garage door opener goes wonky and does not work I have to:

  1. Herd the boys out the front door through a gate that has a latch that sticks into our backyard without letting the dogs out either the front door or the fenced backyard.
  2. Use the keypad lock to open the man door in the detached garage.
  3. Cram ourselves into the small space at the foot of the stairs to close the man door.
  4. Open the other man door into the garage.
  5. Finally use the button on the wall in the garage to open the garage door.

By this time I am as grumpy as hell, we are all wet from the rain that falls 11 months out of the year, and someone has inevitably stepped in dog poo.  So perhaps now you can understand my excitement over my beautiful new keychain garage door opener.

Ok, I told you about my favorite Christmas presents, care to tell me about yours?

Lame Parents Award? Maybe, Then Again Maybe Not…

Last night Husband and I finished wrapping the Christmas gifts for the boys.  It was pretty underwhelming and we were feeling a bit lame.  The boys do not watch much t.v. and what they do watch does not have commercials so they don’t know what to ask for.  We very rarely go to toy stores and the toy aisles at Target make me feel dirty – all that overly colorfully, plastic, light flashing, noise making crap they call toys.  It disturbs me.  I don’t want that stuff in my house.

So what are the boys getting this year?

  • Every year they each get a special handpicked by me Christmas ornament.  This year they are getting wooden, hinge jointed frog pirate ornaments from Cost Plus (they are very cute and it did not hurt that they were 50% off.)
  • Books!  They each are getting a big stack of books I picked up at Goodwill – they were $1 each and look new.
  • Maze and hidden picture workbooks.
  • Ink stamp and pad kit – Cody’s is ocean life and Carter’s is baby animals.
  • The Car’s 2 movie.  Yes, I know it came out this summer and every child has already seen it, but ours have not and they will be thrilled to get it.
  • A Sesame Street Kinect game.
  • A huge pack of wikki sticks.
  • A Velcro ball dartboard game to put at the end of the hallway.
  • A wooden car transporter truck complete with six cars.

The grand finale is left for Santa to bring and leave under the tree when he comes Christmas morning to fill our stockings.  Cody did ask for only one this this year, an RC train on a track.  He asked if he could get one after watching The Polar Express for the first time.  Not to leave Carter out, Santa will be bringing him two battery operated trucks complete with a track.

Last night after placing the last present under the tree, Husband and I stepped back and looked at it.  It did not look like a whole lot, especially since the two really big gifts will not show up until Christmas morning.

This morning when the boys woke up and saw the presents under the tree they were perfectly thrilled.  They had no expectations of large piles of presents and after examining the wrapped goods they ran off down the hallway, each clutching an empty wrapping paper roll, laughing like crazy.  Pure awesome.
